At least thirteen people killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
