Roughly fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Police report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report early analysis suggest the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; officials are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the incident," they added.
Local authorities said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior political figure commented the vandalism made him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at people of foreign heritage in 2020.
