Iran is prepared to reinitiate atomic discussions with the United States provided that it is treated with "respect" and "respect", Iran's top diplomat has announced.

The prior phases of discussions between the US and Iran were brought to an abrupt and hostile termination on 12 June when Israel, with American backing, attacked Iranian nuclear sites in a fortnight-long engagement that ended with the American leader claiming the sites had been obliterated. Subsequently, EU nations used their privilege to restore UN-wide sanctions, but Iran insists they have not had a significant effect.

Magic Solution Suggested

Tehran representatives claimed they felt they had achieved a "magic solution" to the uranium processing matter in earlier negotiations, when it was agreed an local partnership with US participation could process nuclear material. The two nations would have been able to declare success since local refinement would have continued and the US could be assured that Iran's atomic project was solely for peaceful purposes.

It had not been settled in the negotiations that Washington's technical specialists could function inside Iran, but that was a logical implication of the cooperative offer.
