Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an grave risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
