Uche Ignites Dominant Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever continental adventure, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Without star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight entry to the last 16, particularly after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This occasion offered a platform for several Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season were outmatched against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were further weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Established from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the traveling side.
